Update on Valentine's training:
So far, Valentine has been through steady work on the lunge line, some long-lining sessions, and a few rides under saddle. The locking stifle problem held him back for a couple of days, but has since abated. The neck stretchers are helping him reach through his top-line and engage the correct back muscles. He really enjoys his work and concentrates well, even if there are distractions present.
Anne Margaret has been on him twice while I lunged from the ground, to keep Valentine relaxed and consistent with his transitions. I have learned how to read his body language, and Ann Margaret is an experienced rider, which makes for the ideal situation when training a young horse. When both the rider and the handler are experienced there can be clear understanding and a positive experience for the horse. Here are some photos of his training sessions.
